Telehealth Billing - Invoicing

Telehealth Billing

The MBS allows for the provision of services via video conferencing. When these services are delivered via video conferencing an extra payment available from Medicare. The payment is a derived fee based on the original service item.

Telehealth Item Codes

Telehealth Invoices can be generated in the same format as that of general medical and Hospital invoices.

Please refer to Raising an Invoice for instructions on how to raise an invoice.

The following MBS item codes will be supported;

99, 112, 149, 288, 389, 2820, 3015, 6016, 13210, 16399 and 17609.

These items need to be configured correctly in CareRight, Please refer to Configure Telehealth Billing Items in the system admin guide.

When billing for telehealth items and associated item must be added first to the invoice. This will then allow the telehealth item to derive its price from the associated item, using the calculation;

((the price of the associated item) x 0.5) x 0.85

where 0.5 is 50% of the associated item and 0.85 is 85% of this derived fee (outpatient rate of schedule fee).

 The table below is a listing of the telehealth items and their associated item numbers.

Notes:

  • Telehealth items are designed for outpatient services only so using a telehealth item in an inpatient service location or on a private account will not calculate the price correctly.
  • Adding additional characters before or after the telehealth item number will make the item a standard item number and telehealth functionality will not work eg 99F will not utilise the telehealth functionality.
